Let’s Be A Praying Church For Our Nation
By Pastor Joel
As we enter into the month of May, I am yearly reminded of the National Day of Prayer with its annual celebration occurring the first Thursday of May. This year the National Day of Prayer seems even more needed as our country has been embroiled with ugly candidate debates, contested primaries and disjointed caucuses. The behavior and language of our candidates has me concerned for our countries future. Maybe you are concerned too?
Now I don’t want to be political, but it’s hard not to considering the tone of this election so far. Personally, I’m not impressed by the front-runners who will remain unnamed in this article. I have been praying for the good ‘old U.S.A.’ and that God will raise up someone yet to lead this country and be the candidate we need.
So, I want to encourage you to join with me in prayer. It’s time for every Christian to pray for our nation as we petition God together on behalf of our country to bless this land. And God is waiting for our prayers for our country. Remember how God told Solomon and the people to pray as recorded in 2 Chronicles 7: 14; if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.
Our nation needs healing in so many ways. It has to start with the leadership of this country. We need leaders who will seek God, and who know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. And so I will share with you now the official prayer for this year’s National Day of Prayer as a way to get us started praying our country. These words are given to us from pastor and author Dr. Tony Evans:
Dear heavenly Father, we come to You today as a humble people desperate for Your supernatural intervention on behalf of our beloved nation. First, we thank You for all the blessings You have bestowed on our land, blessings that have allowed us to bring so much good and benefit to not only our own citizens but also to the rest of the world. The very ideals upon which this country was founded were based on biblical truths, no matter how some try to rewrite history to deny that very fact today. This is why our hearts are so broken over how You continue to be marginalized and dismissed by both our people and our institutions. We are also saddened by the fact that Your people have contributed greatly to the spiritual apathy that now engulfs us. Our satisfaction in remaining religious without being fully committed to living out the truths of Your Word has caused us to become co-conspirators with the forces of evil that are destroying us as a society. It is for this reason that we personally and collectively repent of our carnality and recommit ourselves to becoming visible and verbal disciples of Jesus Christ. Enable us, by Your Spirit, to no longer be secret agent Christians but rather to publicly declare and live out Your truth in a spirit of love so that You feel welcome in our country once again. Thank You for Your promise to hear our prayers when we call to You with hearts of repentance and obedience, which is how we are appealing to You today, Father. On behalf of Your church, we affirm afresh the priority You are to us that You would fill every dimension of our lives as we seek to bring You glory through the advancement of Your kingdom in our personal lives, our family lives, and in the lives of our churches and our government leaders. We confidently invite heaven’s intervention into all the affairs of our nation and we praise You in advance for Your answer. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
The political arena is just heating up in Washington state as we still have a May 24th presidential primary, an August state primary and the general election in November. To help us all “pray through” this election year there is one more prayer rally I will make you aware of on June 29th in Olympia, WA. It’s called Decision America. It’s a fifty state tour by Franklin Graham as he visits every state capital calling for Christians to “live out their faith at home, in public and at the ballot box – and he will share the gospel as he goes.” We just may load-up a few car loads of people and head to Olympia that day.
I love our nation. I am proud to be an American. I am even more humbly proud to be a Christian. I want the best for our nation and I am willing to seek God’s presence in prayer, will you join me? I pray that even by May 30th, Memorial Day that we can become a more humbled, unified nation. I pray that by Memorial Day our candidates will remember they are here to represent us, the voters and not their own political interest. I pray they remember they are responsible for their ways before God. I pray that all the people who served and died for our country will be honored respectfully this year and not be impacted negatively by a nation that is divided by politics. I pray; “Dear Lord, please hear our prayers and heal our land. Forgive our us our sins.”
My gratitude and appreciation goes out to all you veterans and those of you who are still serving in the military. Thank you and God bless!
